The Government of Alberta has implemented an electric vehicle (EV) tax effective February 13, 2025.
With the number of registered EVS increasing, the EV tax will help fund programs, services and infrastructure Albertans rely on every day, including provincial road maintenance and construction.
Individuals and/or organizations who have battery electric vehicles registered in the following registration classes will be required to pay an annual EV tax of $200 at the time of vehicle initial registration and renewal:
- Passenger vehicles, including cars, light trucks, and SUVs.
- Commercial vehicles, including commercial buses, taxis, rental cars, livery, and farm vehicles.
- Antique vehicles and Government vehicles, including vehicles owned and operated in Alberta by the provincial and municipal governments, as well as school boards (e.g., school buses, transit buses, consular vehicles). Permanent registrations only require a one-time EV tax of $200.
❗Some individuals and organizations maybe exempt and eligible for a rebate of the EV tax. Examples include First Nations individuals and bands with a registered address on reserve.
